The Bulls

Last friday I went to a bull fight. Needless to say it was a unique experience, but I very much enoyed myself. I would describe the atmosphere as a mix between theater, rodeo and tennis. However, the event was much different than I had thought.

The fight can be broken into four stages. It starts with the realease of the bull. Then various bull fighters around the ring try to attract the bull with their capes. When the bull charges at them they jump behind a slit in the wall. When the bull is suficiently mad, trumpets play and two men with wide hats come out on horse carrying large lances. When the bull charges at the horse, which is protected by some kind of woven armor, the fighter thrusts his lance between the bull’s shoulders. This happens twice then the trumpets sound again and two colorfully dressed men enter on foot carrying a decorative stick with a sharp, metal point in each hand. They run sideways at the bull and stick their knives into the bull’s shoulders. This happens three times. Only then does the matador enter the ring (when the bull is a little more tired). He proudly prances around teasing the bull with his cape. Then after about 10-15 minutes he goes for the kill stabing the bull once again between the shoulders with his sword.

The quality of the fight is based on two things. First, how much control the matador exherts over the bull (does the bull always fall for the cape, or does the matador have to jump out of the way?). The more dangerous the bull seems, the better. Second, how clean is the kill (does the matador have to stab him multiple times or is one sufficient?). Obviously a lot depends on the bull.

The crowd starts realtively quite, but as the fight progresses they begin to chant when the see well performed moves. They seranade a good fight by waving white flags or papers and sometime chanting “Torero! Torero!” (bullfighter). If it is especially good, the bull fighter will circle the ring and the crowd will throw a live chicken and hats into the ring.

Lesson: Hasta Luego (ah-stah) (loo-ay-go) – see you later. Ex. Me voy. Hasta luego. (I´m leaving, see you later).

News: The Basque terrorista group ETA bombed the offices of newspaper El Correo near Bilboa last night. Though about 50 workers were in the building at the time of the explosion no one was hurt. The bombing comes only three weeks after authorities arrested ETA’s leader.

Cultural Difference: Spanish dress is slightly more formal and fashionable than in America, however I don’t think it is as big of a deal as many people make it, especialy when it comes to youth. Plenty of kids wear jeans and speakers. You just never see running shoes and few people wear shorts. Many the older generations are more formal often wearing jackets and slacks to dinner.

Fact: Madrid has traffic circles everywhere. In almost every major intersection there is a traffic circle. However they often operate differently from those in the US where cars in the circle have the right-of-way. Sometimes in Madrid, cars must stop at a light halfway around the circle.
