Valle de los Caídos

I lied when I said we had our last group trip because on Tuesday we made an afternoon trek to the Valley of the Fallen. This monument was constructed at the orders of the dictator Francisco Franco to commemorate fallen fascists during the Spanish Civil war. Most of the labor was done at gunpoint by captured enemies and political prisoners. The monument also contains a basilica carved out of the mountain below the cross. Inside is overbearingly spacious, dark and sinister. Knowing what the place represented, I found it to be creepy, but I’m glad we went because it reflects a darker history of Spain that not everyone gets to see. Franco is also buried inside the Basilica. Someone had laid flowers on his tomb when we were there.

Photo: The cross and entrance to the Basilica from the outside. Few people were there when we went. Many Spaniards refuse to visit the place.

Lesson: Una bola de helado (oon-a) (bohl-a) (day) (ay-law-doh)- A scoop of ice cream. I’ve been doing this stupid thing were I get ice cream in every city we visit. I don’t know how or why it started, but I sure enjoy ice cream. Ex. I want a scoop of chocolate in a cup.

News: Really the only other thing in the news these days besides the truckers is the Eurocup. Spain, one of the favorites to win, has one both of its games so far and has already qualified for the quarterfinals. However the most exciting team to watch has been Turkey. In the last game the turks were losing 2-0 with fifteen minutes to play and came back to win 3-2. In the game before they broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in stoppage time.

Cultural Difference: I have none left. Life really isn’t so different here. Plus I feel nervous generalizing Spanish culture too much.

Fact: A lot of people ride motorcycles here, but there aren’t that many freewheeling biker rebels with super-loud Harleys. Most people tool around on their vespas or kawasakis in there business suits on their way to work. Everyone wears a helmet though.

Segovia

We went on our last group trip on Saturday to Segovia and it was easily my favorite. Of the other places we’ve been (Sevilla and Toledo) Segovia seemed to have the best aspects of both. It had the ancient qualities of Toledo, but the festive atmosphere of Sevilla. At times in Toledo I felt the entire town was built for tourists. I did not feel that in Segovia. There were plenty of local cafes and markets. The two best things we saw were the Roman aqueduct and the Alcazar. I would say these were the two best things we saw in all of our trips.

The Roman aqueduct is amazing. It was built in the first century without any mortar. Basically its construction is a highly precise form of stacking stones on top on of one another. It is over 5 stories tall and continued to carry water to Segovia until the 1800’s.

The Alcazar is an equally amazing engineering feat. It is built on the edge of a shear cliff. To me, it appeared like a fairy-tale castle with its walls and towers. The inside was decorative with ornate ceilings and intricate tapestries. I don’t know how any enemy could conquer the place. On one side there is a cliff and a wall and on the other there is a moat. I know if I were king of Segovia I would feel pretty safe.

Lesson: Voy a probar (Boy) (a) (proh-bar) – I’m going to try (something). This is a good phrase to use to order food or when trying on clothing. Ex. Voy a probar el pollo. I’m going to try the chicken. Ex2. Voy a probarlo antes de comprar. I’m going to try it on before buying.

News: The trucker strike continues to be the biggest news here. Last week things turned violent. After clashes with police over 40 truckers were arrested around the country. Protesters also set a truck on fire severely injuring one person sleeping in it.

Cultural Difference: In general, food is slightly different here. People almost never eat frozen or prepared food. Things like Stofers do not exist. Also other than Doner Kabap and Pans and Co., there aren’t a lot of fast food chains.

Fact: The Spanish media covers so much news from the United States it is sometimes ridiculous. El País arguably the most important newspaper in Madrid has an entire section on its webpage for US news. Also in AS, a daily sports newspaper, NBA scores were higher up than the final game of the Spanish basketball championship.

Toledo

Over the weekend we had another group trip to Toledo. This time it was only for the day. Toledo is built on top of a hill and is fabulously mideival with ancient buildings and a wall that surrounds the city. We visited various historic sites around the city including the royal palace and a synagogue from the 10th century. However, probably the most memorable event was seeing John Edwards in the Cathedral de Toledo. Yes it was THE REAL John Edwards, the democratic candidate. Apparently he was there on vacation with his family before he met with President Zapatero of Spain. I don’t have any pictures because they don’t allow photography in the cathedral, but I assure you it was him. He smiled and waved and answered a few questions from our group then continued touring the cathedral with his wife.

Later in the day some of the classmates bought swords.I tried Marzapan, a candy made of ground almonds and sugar, for the first time. I never found out why Toledo is known for it, but I don´t really care because I thought it was nasty.

(Koh-moh) (say) (yama) – What is this called? Pretty much you’ll be fine by pointing to something and saying this. Ex. ¿Como se llama un animal que vuele? What do you call an animal that flies?

News: Remember I told you about the fishermen that were on strike, protesting the high price of oil and demanding subsidies? You can also add the taxis and the truckers to that list. Yesterday hundreds of trucks blocked multiple highways into Madrid. There are now legitimate concernes of rising food prices and gasoline shortages.

Cultural Difference: Standards for tipping are much different here. In general, you do not tip taxis or bartenders. You do tip waiters but only about 5%. I still tip taxi drivers a Euro or so.

Fact: There is a pizza place near my house called Telepizza. Its a pretty standard restaurant. I go there for the Internet. What I think is cool is that they deliver pizza on mopeds. They have a bunch parked out front with plastic boxes strapped to the back. I bet it is pretty fun to be a delivery guy for them, except when it rains.

The Bulls

Last friday I went to a bull fight. Needless to say it was a unique experience, but I very much enoyed myself. I would describe the atmosphere as a mix between theater, rodeo and tennis. However, the event was much different than I had thought.

The fight can be broken into four stages. It starts with the realease of the bull. Then various bull fighters around the ring try to attract the bull with their capes. When the bull charges at them they jump behind a slit in the wall. When the bull is suficiently mad, trumpets play and two men with wide hats come out on horse carrying large lances. When the bull charges at the horse, which is protected by some kind of woven armor, the fighter thrusts his lance between the bull’s shoulders. This happens twice then the trumpets sound again and two colorfully dressed men enter on foot carrying a decorative stick with a sharp, metal point in each hand. They run sideways at the bull and stick their knives into the bull’s shoulders. This happens three times. Only then does the matador enter the ring (when the bull is a little more tired). He proudly prances around teasing the bull with his cape. Then after about 10-15 minutes he goes for the kill stabing the bull once again between the shoulders with his sword.

The quality of the fight is based on two things. First, how much control the matador exherts over the bull (does the bull always fall for the cape, or does the matador have to jump out of the way?). The more dangerous the bull seems, the better. Second, how clean is the kill (does the matador have to stab him multiple times or is one sufficient?). Obviously a lot depends on the bull.

The crowd starts realtively quite, but as the fight progresses they begin to chant when the see well performed moves. They seranade a good fight by waving white flags or papers and sometime chanting “Torero! Torero!” (bullfighter). If it is especially good, the bull fighter will circle the ring and the crowd will throw a live chicken and hats into the ring.

Cultural Difference: Spanish dress is slightly more formal and fashionable than in America, however I don’t think it is as big of a deal as many people make it, especialy when it comes to youth. Plenty of kids wear jeans and speakers. You just never see running shoes and few people wear shorts. Many the older generations are more formal often wearing jackets and slacks to dinner.

Fact: Madrid has traffic circles everywhere. In almost every major intersection there is a traffic circle. However they often operate differently from those in the US where cars in the circle have the right-of-way. Sometimes in Madrid, cars must stop at a light halfway around the circle.

Sevilla

The past weekend all of the program participants went to Sevilla for two days in a big pre-organized trip. Sevilla is a marvelously historic city with one of the largest cathedrals in the World. The Cathedral de Sevilla is massive inside and out with towering gothic arches and anchient carved furniture. The altar is a five-story-high, gold-painted cedar engraving, detailing all of the stories of the Bible.

The rest of the town sits along the magestically walled Guadalquivir river, with narrow cobblestone streets and mediterranian stucco buildings. Do you remember the scene in the Bourne Ultimatum, where Bourne is running from the bad guys, jumping through windows and from roof to roof? I felt like I could do that. Sevillanos hang sheets between buildings to create shade during the summer because it is usually unbearably hot. The city was also more festive than Madrid. During siesta many bars open their doors and the people eat and drink in the streets and plazas. There were also a few processions marching through the streets during the day to comemorate the Cruz Mayo.

At night we started at a little tapas bar near Plaza Alfalfa, then went to this great flamenco bar called Carbonería that had live music and dance. Seating consisted of pinic tables, and the floor was slanted, which was very different from most other taberns in Spain which I find to be more formal. The place was very old, but had a vibrant atmosphere.

(Kay-tahl) – This is an introductory phrase that is as informal as “what’s up,” but is answered with a feeling. Ex. My Señora: Hola ¿Qué tal? Me: Bien.

News: The spanish soccer club Villareal has signed an american player. Josmer Altidore of Red Bull NY was transfered from the MLS for about $10 million. It is not huge news here but made the front page of the Sports section in El País. Villareal plays in the top tier of the spanish league and finished second last year behind Real Madrid.

Cultural Difference: It seems to me that Spaniards in general approach cars differently. First they are smaller. Most are hatchbacks and coupes. Second not many drive luxury cars. What luxury cars you see are usually quite old. Third you almost never see suped up racers or anything like that. Four almost all cars are manual, even taxis. My conclusion is that cars aren’t as big of a status stymbol here as in the United States.

Fact: There is a chain of giant department stores all over Spain called El Corte Ingles. They are enormous stores that sell literally everything you could possibly want. Imagine a Macy’s, Supermarket, Best Buy, Ace Hardware, Toys R Us, Barnes & Nobels, and Office Max all rolled into one. It always takes me forever to find something I need because the store is so huge and has so many departments.

A Typical Weekday

I have a really hectic schedule. Here’s generally how things work during the week.

7:30am - wake up and eat light breakfast of crackers, jam and fruit
8:15am - leave for work taking the light rail trolley to Metro line 4 to line 7 to the Garcia Noblejas stop (I have to transfer trains twice)
9:25am – arrive at work and check mail and other things until my co-workers arrive (usually around 10:00am)
2:30pm – leave work and take Metro line 5 to the Rubén Dario stop where I have class at the International Institute
3:10pm – arrive at the Institute and eat lunch (a sandwich and fruit that my señora packs me) in the cafeteria.
3:45pm – finish homework from the day before for my 5:15 class
5:15pm – class on Spanish literature and cinema.
7:00pm – class finishes start homework for next class
8:00pm – leave institute for home taking Metro line 10 to line 1 to the trolley.
9:00pm – arrive home

11:30 – on a good day I’m in bed.

In summary, I spend almost three hours each day commuting on the metro. I ride six different trains and basically traverse the entire length and width of the city, but it really is worth it because my host family is great and I really like what I do at work.

Lesson: Caña (can-ya) – is a draft beer in a smaller glass (around 10 oz). It is usually a local beer like cruzcampo or mahou and costs one or two euros. Most bars only have one or two beers on tap so there is no need to be specific about what type. Ex. Déme una caña. I would like a caña.
Tapa (tah-pah) – are small plates of food served in bars and cafés and are often eaten late at night with drinks. They can be pretty much anything (often fish, potatoes, vegetables or cheese) just in a snack size portion.

News: During the start of May, Barcelona Spain was really dry. The city had received no rain and was forced to import water from other places. Over the past two weeks it has rained non stop there to a point where they have not only made up for the drought but have too much water. In a bit of irony Zaragosa, the site of this summers water expo, was flooded.

Cultural Difference: Spaniards eat their largest meal of the day at lunch, usually between 2:00pm and 4:00pm. The meal often consists of multiple courses such as soup, salad and some kind of meat. Dinner is eaten late around 10:00pm and is smaller.

Fact: It has been quite cold here, barley getting into 60’s each day. Everyone tells me this is highly unusual for this time of year. May was also the rainiest month in 80 years. I had to buy a jacket because I brought no warm clothing.

First Day of Work

Needless to say I didn’t get a great start. I was 15 minutes late to my interview. I underestimated the time it took for me to get from my house to work and only left myself 10 minutes to find the place once I got off the train. It also did not help that I went the wrong direction at first. However, I did get very good at asking for directions in Spanish (see lesson and fact). When I got there the head boss asked me a few quick questions then sent me off to work. All of my coworkers are friendly and my supervisors are very patient.
Pues, no empecé bien. Llegué 15 minutos tarde a mi entrevista.

The company is called Grupo Progresa. It is a publishing company that publishes many English language (such as Rolling Stone and Business Traveller) and Spanish language magazines in Spain. I work in the corporate magazine department primarily with two bi-lingual travel magazines called Europa and AC magazine. On a daily basis I translate small texts from Spanish to English, edit the longer English bits and write small summaries in Spanish. I find what I do very stimulating. I enjoy reading the articles about Spanish companies and tourist destinations.

News: Fishermen around Europe, including some in Barcelona are striking against high gas prices and demanding government subsidies. They say the business is no longer profitable for them because of high fixed costs.

Cultural Difference: In general, Spaniards stay up later, especially on the weekends. No bars close before 2:00am and I would say most stay open until dawn.

Fact: On some streets in Madrid there are buildings with the same number. For example the building I work in is 29b. Building 29 is further up the street. This also played a part in my inability to find my office on the first day.

Finally! first post of the revamped travel and photo blog from Madrid. Here is how things will work. I’m going to enter a few posts each week when I have time. Features will include photos, Spanish language lessons, news, cultural difference and other quirks about Madrid and the places I visit. All entries will be offered in English and in Spanish to enhance your cultural experience. Please excuse my Spanish grammar. I have a bunch of stuff backed up because I don’t have Internet at my house so I don’t have a lot of time to upload.

Photo: The view from my bedroom window. I live pretty far from downtown, but fairly close to the airport. On clear days you can see planes taking off.

Lesson: Vale (bah-lay) – simplified it is the Spanish equivalent to “ok.” It is a very versatile word probably the most commonly used in Spain. Other meanings include “yes, clearly and of course.” Ex. Boss: Tait I need you to translate this for me. ¿vale? Me: Vale

News: The first week I was here, the Spanish national police with cooperation from the French government captured the leader of ETA, a terrorist organization fighting for the independence of the Basque country.

Cultural Difference: Most stores close between 3:00pm and 5:00pm for siesta. Usually only large department stores and restaurants are open.

Fact: There are Ben & Jerry’s ice cream ads everywhere. They have funny slogans in Spanish like “Your grandmother would give it to you if you could pronounce it correctly.”
